Luncheon meeting with KFTC Chairperson Kim Sang-jo

ECCK hosted a luncheon meeting with Kim Sang-jo, Chairperson of Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC), on June 22, 2018, at Grand Hyatt Seoul. Around 50 representatives from ECCK member companies and European embassies attended the luncheon meeting.

European business leaders including Dimitris Psillakis, Chairman of ECCK and President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Korea, engaged in a dialogue to convey operational business concerns and recommendations to the KFTC and share opinions on various industrial issues for the advancement of the business environment in Korea.

The event opened with welcoming remarks by Chairman Psillakis. Following the welcoming remarks, the keynote speech was delivered by Chairperson Kim on the topic of ‘21c Economic Landscape & Competition Policy’. In his speech, Chairperson Kim shared the Korean government’s policy approach and tasks aimed at economic democratization as well as its plan for the revision of the Monopoly Regulation and Fair Trade Act.

Gyeongnam Investors Network Night & Site Tour

The Gyeongnam Investors Network Night & Site Tour 2018, hosted by Gyeongnam province and co-organized by the ECCK together with Geoje Maritime Tourism & Development Corporation, was held from Thursday, May 31 to Friday, June 1 in Gyeongnam.

The two-day event kicked off with Investors Network Night in the evening of May 31 at the Stanford Hotel & Resort Tongyeong. The networking event was attended by the dignitaries and European business leaders from ECCK, Investment Promotion of Division from Gyeongnam, SENER, and Belgium Embassy. Throughout the evening, the attendees were able to learn about the investment environment and success stories of foreign direct investment in Gyeongnam,

On the second day, the participants went on a tour around the attractive Gyeongnam area. The day began with a visit to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) site in Geoje Island followed by a trip to Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone (BJFEZ) in the afternoon. Also, the group had a chance to visit inside the Busan New Port area and Busan International Distribution Company which was organized by Busan Port Authority.

ECCK holds a BPR seminar in cooperation with ERM

In the afternoon of June 12, the ECCK Chemical Committee co-organized a seminar on Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) with ERM at Courtyard Marriott Seoul Namdaemun. Attended by the Committee members and industry professionals from ERM and the Ministry of Environment (ME), the day’s featuring speakers from ERM included Dr. Richard Elsmore and Dr. Samantha Wright who talked about EU-BPR and how it’s differentiated from K-BPR. Followed by was a presentation by Mr Dea Joon (Deputy Director, ME) who shared legislation information on Enforcement decrees and Rules of K-BPR.

By the end of the seminar, a Q&A and networking sessions were provided in which participants engaged in further discussion and active information sharing pertaining to the day’s topic.

ECCK Fintech Seminar: Robo-Advisor in Insur-Tech

On June 19, ECCK Insurance Committee organized a Fintech Seminar on the topic of ‘Introduction to Robo-Advisor in Insur-Tech’ with a special guest speaker YB Kim, CEO and Founder of Fount Inc. In attendance were around 30 members and colleagues from the Chamber’s Insurance Committee member companies.

The seminar focused on the changing demographics and the rapid digitization of financial service industry and how Robo-Advisor is innovating the way wealth should be managed and invested. Mr Kim delivered a presentation about backgrounds and changes of Robo-Advisor business as well as the current state of Insur Tech and usages of Robo-Advisor in variable insurance.The next fintech seminar will be held in September.

ECCK Busan Summer Network Night with NBA

In the evening of June 26, ECCK Busan Chapter co-hosted ‘Summer Network Night’ together with Norwegian Business Association (NBA) at the Hilton Busan.

The evening event started with opening remarks by ECCK President Christoph Heider, then followed by welcoming remarks by NBA Chairman Ian Edwards. Throughout the evening, various prizes were prepared for the best-dressed one of the night, the World Cup quiz, and the lucky draw where the luckiest winner went back home with round tickets from Busan to Hong Kong by Cathay Pacific.

We would like to thank all the participants who came to enjoy the summer evening with us despite the unexpected rain. ECCK Info Session on ‘The 8 Techniques of Innovative Thinking’

On June 26, the ECCK organized an information session entitled ‘The 8 Techniques of Innovative Thinking’ at Grand Hyatt Seoul. For the day’s event, Mr Conrad Heraud, a president of Heraud Associates, came over from Japan to share his insights on some of the techniques to bring out innovative thinking.

The 8 Techniques workshop has been conducted for leading Japanese, European and American corporations that have included Lawson, Ericsson, Bayer, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Johnson & Johnson, Nike and American Express. He also lectures at Waseda University.

ECCK President Christoph Heider attended Korea Economic Forum organized by Korea Joongang Daily to hear Financial Services Commission (FSC) Chairman Choi Jong-ku’s discussion about current developments in the Korean economy and changes to financial regulations. President Heider expressed interest in the regulations related to the fourth industrial revolution that FSC Chairman Choi discussed during his speech. Heider echoed Choi’s sentiment that discussing regulations is difficult as the fourth industrial revolution changes is unchartered territory. He said he is particular interested to see what direction Korea takes as it is currently the 11th biggest economy in the world and has the potential to become at least the 11th most innovative in the financial service industry. “We have to be very careful with rules and regulations related to financial innovation,” said Heider.

Release of ECCK Survey Report 2018 on Consumers’ Perception of Counterfeits

The ECCK is pleased to announce that the 2018 version of our study on consumers’ perception of counterfeit products has been released. On May 20, the ECCK participated in the Busan Global Gathering, an annual international event for locals and expatriates to network and experience world cultures. At its book, the ECCK provided information on the insidious effects of the counterfeit industry and conducted a public perception survey about counterfeits. The survey results have been thoroughly analyzed and are now published as the online report namely ‘Busan Consumers’ Perception of Counterfeit Products 2018.’
