‘Korea-Europe Future Automotive Forum’ concludes with great success

ECCK hosted ‘Korea-Europe Future Automotive Forum’ on March 28 at the Conrad Seoul. The forum was co-hosted with the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) and Korea Automobile Importers and Distributers Association (KAIDA).

Under the theme ‘The Future of Mobility will be Cleaner and Smarter!’, the event focused on three main topics of future mobility; Autonomous Driving, Connectivity, and Electric Vehicle. More than 100 industry experts and academics in the field of automotive technology participated to discuss about the transportation revolution for which both Europe and Korea will be able to seek broader future cooperation.

“With a long history of innovating together, the strategic partnership in automotive technologies is of great significance to both Korea and Europe. In light of these paradigm shifts in automobility in the age of fourth industrial revolution, it is important to deepen this partnership and turn challenges into opportunities, and find solutions to environmental crisis together.”, said ECCK Chairman Dimitris Psillakis in his opening remarks.

ECCK holds Annual General Meeting 2018

On Monday, February 26, the ECCK held its Annual General Meeting where members reviewed the state of the Chamber, its performance and accomplishments in the past year, and the outlook for 2018. For ECCK members and staffs in Busan, the Chamber conducted a live video conference for the meeting. ECCK Chairman Dimitris Psillakis provided welcoming remarks followed by words of congratulations by Deputy Minister Youngsam Kim of Minsitry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE). Focusing on the advocacy activities by the Chamber, the ECCK President Christoph Heider provided an update of the operating performance, key events and ongoing plans for the future. The AGM also included reporting on the annual accounts, 2018 budget, and membership dues.

MOTIE-ECCK Round Table Meeting

On March 9, the ECCK held a round table meeting with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and ECCK member companies to discuss about ways to improve the business and investment environment in Korea. MOTIE Director General, Mr Young Jin Jang, and representatives from KOTRA as well as ECCK member companies from various industry sectors participated in the meeting. The European business people shared their companies’ investment plan in the country and delivered its requests for support to the Korean government. Also, Director General Jang shared the updates of investment promotion trends and major economic policies with the attendees.

Logistics Industrial Seminar on Crisis Management Planning

In the afternoon of March 27, the ECCK held a logistics industrial seminar at Seoul Square building. Under the theme of ‘Crisis Management Planning for a North Korean Crisis’, the seminar was attended by a guest speaker, Rodney J. Johnson who is a president of Erudite Risk. Along with effective strategic risk management, Mr Johnson particularly discussed on crisis management for a conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

ECCK held Seminar on Standard Essential Patents

In the morning of March 21, the ECCK held its second seminar on Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) under the title of ‘Recent Developments in Europe and Korea’. During the seminar, the European and Korean experts clarified the most pertinent developments, the interplay of these and discussed what the future may hold for SEPs in light of industry 4.0.

The seminar was very timely as the European Commission had indicated its strategy to establish a balanced IP enforcement system responding to today’s societal challenges and that SEP protection and their licensing are topics of many debates worldwide.

ECCK Participated in The EU Agri-Foods SPS Seminar

The ‘EU Agri-Foods SPS Seminar’, hosted by the European Union (EU), was held from March 20~21 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul. Joined by food industry experts from both EU and Korea, the seminar provided an opportunity to learn about sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS) and food quality standards employed in the EU.

The event also featured a special roundtable debate entitled “The Korean market, in food safety and quality standards: benefits and challenges”, where Mr Erwan Vilfeu, Chairman of ECCK Food Committee and CEO of Nestlé Korea, participated as a panelist. Mr Vilfeu emphasized the need to focus on identifying characteristics of Korean consumers and markets in order to successfully enter the market.

ECCK Seminar on Labour Market Trends and Expectation

In the morning of March 14, the ECCK organized its annual seminar on ‘Labour Market Trends and Expectation’ in cooperation with Robert Walters and Bae, Kim & Lee. The seminar provided participating companies with insights on developments in their particular segment, as follows from Robert Walters’ Salary Survey, as well as expected amendments to pertinent labour regulations and their impact on the industry. We would like to thank everyone for their participation and hope to see them all again in our future events.

Information Session on The Evolution of Tiger Management

In the morning of March 6, the ECCK held an information session under the title of ‘The Evolution of Tiger Management: Korean Companies in Global Competition’. Dr Martin Hemmert, a professor of International Business at Korea University, came as a guest speaker for the day’s event and talked about various aspects on the Korean-style management so called ‘tiger management’ and how companies can build effective governance structure and strategy in line with such style.

Seminar on The ABC’s of Anti-Bribery and Compliance in Korea

On March 7, ECCK joined forces with Transparency International, Bae, Kim & Lee, and Deloitte in organizing the seminar ‘The ABC’s of Anti-Bribery and Compliance in Korea’. During the seminar, industrial-expert speakers highlighted the importance of corporate compliance and presented the 2017 Corruption Perceptions Index, the implementation of the Anti-Graft Act as well as strategies to establish compliance business practices.

First Marine & Shipbuilding Committee Meeting of 2018

The first Marine & Shipbuilding Committee meeting for this year was held on Monday, February 26, at the Salon of Park Hyatt Busan. The meeting began with opening remarks by the Committee head, Ms. Hwonnarae Ha. Under the theme of ‘Maritime Cluster & Technology in Korea’, the meeting featured guest speakers from Korean Register of Shipping (KR), Dr. J. H Yoo (N.Y. Attorney) and Mr. MD Shafiqul Islam. Along with an update of the KR’s activities and its ongoing plans for the future, the experts gave presentations about ‘Maritime Cluster Networking in Korea and its Cluster Triad’ and ‘Fire and Explosion Safety Design for Offshore Platforms’.
