Exploring the present and future of classical music! Since its founding in 2017, Sejong Soloists’ Hic et Nunc! Music Festival has earned a reputation for presenting innovative and novel programs. This year, Sejong Soloists, a precious partner of ECCK, celebrating its 30th anniversary, is joined by artists who have significantly influenced its three decades of history. Sejong Soloists Chamber Music Series: Extraordinary Quintet!
2024. 8. 21 (WED) 7:30 PM | Seoul Arts Center, IBK Chamber Hall
The chamber music series presented by Sejong Soloists—will take place at the IBK Chamber Hall of the Seoul Arts Center on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 7:30 PM. In this concert, four concertmasters—Frank Huang (New York Philharmonic), David Chan (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Daniel Cho (Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra), and Andrew Wan (Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal)—will give a special quintet performance with Wayne Lin (Associate Concertmaster of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra), and double bassist DaXun Zhang.

Sejong Soloists and the Four Concertmasters
2024. 8. 24 (SAT) 5 PM | Seoul Arts Center, Concert Hall
“Sejong Soloists and Four Concertmasters,” scheduled for August 24th, will showcase Sejong Soloists performing alongside four of its nine former members who currently serve as concertmasters in some of North America and Europe’s most prestigious orchestras. This event seamlessly integrates the past, present, and future of Sejong Soloists. The concert will feature the Asia premiere of the Concerto for Four Violins by Texu Kim, the first Korean composer to win the Barlow Prize, and Tod Machover’s recently composed Flow Symphony, which incorporates generative AI technology.

On August 27th, violist Richard Yongjae O’Neill and soprano Sumi Hwang will grace the stage alongside the ensemble. O’Neill, who ascended to stardom following his initial visit to Korea in 2001 as a member of the Sejong Soloists and has since been in high demand, is set to present the Korea premiere of Theofanidis’s Concerto for Viola and Chamber Orchestra, a performance whose recording earned him a Grammy Award. Sumi Hwang, the 2014 Queen Elisabeth Competition laureate and the renowned “Olympic Diva” who performed the Olympic Anthem at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics opening ceremony, will enchant the audience with her elegant and splendid voice as she sings opera arias, supported by the cohesive performance of the Sejong Soloists.

Paul Huang, the distinguished recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2015 and the Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award in 2017, has been a longstanding violinist with the Sejong Soloists. He will be the featured artist in this year’s inaugural “Alumni Series.” This recital offers a unique opportunity to revel in chamber music pieces performed by members of the Sejong Soloists.

Demonstrating its dedication to highlighting emerging talents in the realm of classical music, Sejong Soloists proudly features violist Haesue Lee, the esteemed winner of the prestigious ARD International Competition in September 2023, as the centerpiece of this season’s Young Virtuoso Series. Audiences will have the opportunity to witness the exceptional artistry and promising potential of this young violist in her inaugural recital following her remarkable victory.

Sejong Soloists
Hailed by CNN as “one of the top ensembles of today,” Sejong Soloists has performed internationally on the world’s major stages and by invitation from prestigious U.S. venues, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Since its inception 30 years ago, the orchestra has performed 700 concerts in more than 120 cities around the world. Sejong Soloists served as the Honorary Ambassador of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games and ensemble-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival for nine seasons.
Sejong Soloists was established as a string orchestra in New York in 1994, consisting of eleven young international artists invited by Hyo Kang, renowned violin professor at the Juilliard School. Sejong Soloists has ventured and grown with bold performances and repertoires ranging from classics of the chamber music repertoire to countless contemporary works, including 15 world premieres.
