ACEA Secretary General “Imported car regulation must be transparent and predictable”
*The following excerpt is from the interview with Erik Jonnaert, Secretary General of European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), published in the special edition of Economy Chosun on July 23.
The interview was conducted during his visit to Seoul on the occasion of the ‘Korea-EU Future Automotive Forum’ held last March, co-organized by the ECCK and ACEA.

“The EU is a single market, not a single country. The 28 countries with different economic conditions and cultures gathered to set the standard, and the quality and service level will increase. “
Secretary General of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Erik Jonnaert, explained the high popularity of European cars. ACEA was founded in 1991 to protect the interests of automotive manufacturers in Europe. Non-European companies with production facilities in Europe, including Hyundai Motor Group (including Kia Motors), Honda and Toyota, as well as European companies such as BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler (FCA) are members of the association.
According to a recent report published by the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), European automobile brands from Germany, U.K., France, Italy, and Sweden are taking up 77.8% of the imported car market share in the first half of 2018, up 3.9% from the same period last year. The number of registered cars reached 109,053, up 24.8% from the first half of last year. US and Japanese cars accounted for only 7% and 15.2% of imported cars in the same period, respectively.
Secretary General Jonnaert is a Belgian citizen, graduated from Harvard Law School and has been serving as ACEA Secretary General since October 2013. Prior to his ACEA appointment, Mr. Jonnaert was Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) Vice President for External Relations in Europe and Asia. Mr Jonnaert began his career at Linklaters law firm, before moving on to gain over 25 years of public and regulatory affairs, communications, and stakeholder relations experience in various leadership roles at P&G.
