ECCK Participated in The EU Agri-Foods SPS Seminar
The ‘EU Agri-Foods SPS Seminar’, hosted by the European Union (EU), was held from March 20~21 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul. Joined by food industry experts from both EU and Korea, the seminar provided an opportunity to learn about sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS) and food quality standards employed in the EU.
The event also featured a special roundtable debate entitled “The Korean market, in food safety and quality standards: benefits and challenges”, where Mr Erwan Vilfeu, Chairman of ECCK Food Committee and CEO of Nestlé Korea, participated as a panelist. Mr Vilfeu emphasized the need to focus on identifying characteristics of Korean consumers and markets in order to successfully enter the market.
Looking at the latest Business Confidence Survey taken by the ECCK and published in January 2018, 44% of industry leaders pointed out that Korean market is strategic importance, at the same time more challenging than 2 years ago because of economic growth, raising of labor cost, rules and regulations. Mr Vilfeu also commented that the necessity for legislation to evolve so to align speed of innovation with consumer needs. Although it is difficult to enter, it is positive that 21% of Korean consumers are showing preference for European products.
