A leading driver and strong advocate for European Businesses in Korea
ECCK Seminar ‘The Implications of EU GDPR in Korea’
On November 13, the ECCK organized a seminar under the theme “The Implications of EU GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in Korea”. The seminar was co-hosted by the ECCK, International Cyber Law Studies in Korea, and Korea University Cyber Law Center, and supported by the EU Delegation to the Republic of Korea. More than 80 participants had a great opportunity to learn and discuss about the GDPR, the EU’s newly introduced data protection framework which will be enacted from May 2018. The seminar focused on the significance and impact of the GDPR on businesses and how companies should prepare for the new compliance.
The event opened with welcome and congratulatory remarks by Nohyoung Park (Professor, Korea University School of Law), H.E. Michael Reiterer (Ambassador of the EU to the Republic of Korea), and Chaeho Reem (Standing Commissioner of Personal Information Protection Commission). First session of the seminar examined the ‘International Significance of GDPR’ by Changbeom Yi (Advisor, Kim & Chang), while the following session focused on ‘Domestic Impact of GDPR’ by Kyunghwan Kim (Attorney, Minwho Law Group). The ECCK would like to thank the speakers and all participants who attended the seminar. The next GDPR seminar will be held in the first quarter of 2018.
The EU GDPR offers a higher level of privacy protection and attracts worldwide attention as it seeks a balance between personal information protection and the usages of personal information, in the era of digital economy such as artificial intelligence and big data.
