A leading driver and strong advocate for European Businesses in Korea
[Economy Chosun] On the Eradication of Counterfeit Goods
“The Eradication of Counterfeit Goods Will Lead to More Growth Opportunities for Small Fashion Companies in Korea”
Many of the counterfeit products that are being imported into Korea are copies of European luxury brands. The ECCK facilitates in the eradication of counterfeit goods on behalf of European fashion companies such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Hermes that are damaged by these counterfeited products.
Sven-Erik Batenburg, head of ECCK’s IPR Committee said, “it has been estimated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in 2007 that approximately 2% of the worldwide trade concerns counterfeit or pirated products. These products pose a threat to public health and safety, due to the use of cheap materials and the lack of testing. The Seoul government analyzed the confiscated counterfeit goods and found these to contain in some cases 500 times more heavy metals such as lead and cadmium than is admissible. Additionally, because no taxes are paid over counterfeit products, there will be a loss in government revenues.”
He further commented that “the Korean fashion market is very important because it is sensitive to the latest trend and European fashion companies are interested in it. However it is unfortunate that there currently are no representative Korean fashion brands that are well-known around the world. Cheap counterfeited versions of luxury brands harm the Korean fashion companies.”
He finally added, “the eradication of counterfeit goods will lead to more growth opportunities for small fashion companies that have been trying to develop their products. On behalf of its members, the ECCK actively encourages and has facilitated in the communication between brand owners and various government agencies, as well between government agencies.”
