Jung-gu Appreciation Plaque Ceremony
On May 21, the ECCK presented an appreciation plaque to Mr. Chang-Sik Choi, the Mayor of Seoul’s Jung-gu District in recognition of continuous efforts and exemplary achievements in combatting counterfeiting and protecting intellectual property in his district.
Mr. Choi has become increasingly concerned with the dangers to public safety, unfair competition with small, legitimate local manufacturers, loss in government revenue caused by counterfeit goods in addition to the tarnishment of the public image caused by the open sale of counterfeit goods. To bring an end to such, Mr. Choi established a special unit responsible for cracking down on the sale of counterfeit goods in the Jung-gu District. In the course of the past 2 years, the special unit has seized in excess of 100,000 counterfeit products, which have a joined value of KRW 55 billion if they were legitimately produced.
Jung-gu Districts efforts have resulted in a drastic decrease of the availability of counterfeit goods in the street markets in popular regions such as Myeong-dong, Namdaemun Market and Dongdaemun. Mr. Choi and Mr. Christoph Heider, Secretary-General of ECCK, agreed on continuous cooperation in order to further limit the availability of counterfeit goods in the Jung-gu District.
