About
The Netherlands and South Korea: co-create tomorrow
In 2021, the Republic of Korea and the Kingdom of the Netherlands celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations. To mark this significant and symbolic moment, and an occasion to deepen our friendship, we will find ways to co-create tomorrow. Throughout 2021, we will strengthen the ties between the Korean and Dutch people with joint activities, exhibitions, and events at various venues both on- and off-line.
Hwangap, or turning 60, means something special in Korean culture. It means you have accomplished one full lifecycle and are about to enter the next one, based on the 60-year calendar cycle combined with the Eastern zodiac. For us, it is an opportunity to celebrate both the completion of one cycle of friendship and the beginning of a new one. With our shared past, we will envision our common future with the 60th anniversary of our diplomatic relations.
Celebrating our shared history, we will commemorate our joint effort for freedom side by side, when Dutch troops took part in the Korean War. Our partnership has always stood for the advancement of international peace, security, and justice, including on the Korean Peninsula. On the occasion of our bilateral anniversary, we will look for ways to deepen and expand this cooperation.
The year 2021 is an important turning point for all of us. The COVID-pandemic has posed enormous challenges to the international community. More than ever before, we need new energy and innovative ideas. The Republic of Korea and the Netherlands stand for multilateralism, for a belief that these challenges can be overcome by working together. We will cooperate to address global threats, to tackle environmental issues such as climate change and clean air, and to uphold and strengthen the international rule of law.
And there are many more ways for Korea and the Netherlands to co-create tomorrow. Over the last 60 years, our economic relationship has thrived in particular – a relationship defined by a focus on innovation and by a keen eye for commercial trends. Korea and the Netherlands have become vital partners in trade and investments, and our businesses are cooperating closely in global supply chains to provide the world with number one brands. Together, we can create an even more prosperous and sustainable tomorrow. The future needs our joint efforts in the field of digitalization, as well as on healthy and affordable food and natural resources.
Cultural cooperation is also an important part of this friendship year. Korea and the Netherlands inspire each other through exchange and cooperation in many areas. Artist-in-residency partnerships, performances, films and books translated, graphic and urban design collaboration, and many other activities have helped both sides to ensure higher quality and broader recognition of our important values.
Yet Hwangap not only signifies ‘rebirth’; it also implies the celebration of a 60th birthday. And culture, the window of communication between our countries, will help us to publicly celebrate our anniversary. So this year we will not only look back. We will celebrate Hwangap with an attractive program where we co-create and celebrate what is to come, where Korea and the Netherlands seize opportunities together to achieve our joint international ambitions.
Our anniversary has come at a crucial time. For both Korea and the Netherlands, 2021 is a year of growth, of a fresh start. Of a chance to rebuild, improve and strengthen – at home and abroad. To realize our shared goal, we need new energy, creativity, and innovation. And we stand ready to co-create tomorrow.
