Release of ECCK Survey Report 2017 on Consumers’ Perception of Counterfeits
The ECCK is pleased to announce that the latest version of our study on consumers’ perception of counterfeit products has been released. On May 20, the ECCK had participated in the Busan Global Gathering, an annual event attracting approximately 30,000 visitors. At its booth, the ECCK provided information on the insidious effects of the counterfeit industry and conducted a public perception survey about counterfeits. The survey results have been thoroughly analyzed and are now published in the report ‘Busan Consumers’ Perception of Counterfeit Products 2017.’
The main findings of the survey are as follows:
A significant 41% of respondents indicated to have purchased counterfeit products;
These respondents mostly made their purchases at online platforms with open markets and search engines being key intermediaries;
The most popular categories of counterfeit products were all related to apparel, in particular clothing, shoes, bags and wallets;
While almost all respondents perceived the counterfeit industry to be a concern (mostly due to their damage to companies’ brand image and the harm inflicted on consumers), the respondents pointed to counterfeit products’ low price as the main reason behind their purchases;
Almost 3 in 4 respondents called for increased enforcement activities against counterfeiting, with a substantial segment proposing the criminalization of counterfeit purchases.
