A leading driver and strong advocate for European Businesses in Korea
Roundtable Meeting with KIPO Highlights IP Protection for Foreign-Invested Companies
On February 18, the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK) participated in a roundtable meeting with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and Invest Korea, a national investment promotion agency under the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). Held at KIPO’s Seoul Office, the meeting gathered representatives from major foreign chambers of commerce and foreign-invested companies to discuss key intellectual property (IP) challenges and policy directions in Korea. Participants included representatives from the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM), the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea (BCCK), the Seoul Japan Club (SJC), and the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AustCham), as well as executives from leading global companies such as Lam Research (USA), Umicore (Belgium), Louis Vuitton (France), and 3M (USA).
The discussion covered critical IP concerns, including the distribution of counterfeit goods on online platforms, patent infringement risks, and the need for stronger enforcement measures. Given that over 18,000 foreign-invested companies operate in Korea, participants emphasized the importance of a robust and transparent IP protection system to ensure a fair and secure business environment. Attendees acknowledged the Korean government’s ongoing efforts to enhance IP rights protection and encouraged further policy initiatives to address emerging challenges. In response, KIPO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting corporate innovation and strengthening international cooperation in IP protection. ECCK will continue working closely with relevant authorities to advocate for stronger IP safeguards and ensure a sustainable investment environment for its members.
