A leading driver and strong advocate for European Businesses in Korea
[Seoul Economy] Interview with ECCK Chairperson
An interview with ECCK Chairperson Dirk Lukat was published in Seoul Economy on December 21. In the interview, Chairperson Lukat shares the his personal experience with DB Schenker and ECCK along with the importance of international standards.
Synopsis
The annual ECCK whitepaper strongly calls for full compliance with international standards. This year’s white paper, released at the end of September, included a total of 114 suggestions. The white paper, written to penetrate the nature of major industry-specific problems faced by companies and to promote open and effective dialogue with the Korean government and public institutions, is also considered the most important of ECCK’s annual activities. The white paper contains content that “supports complete compliance with international standards” and “customized regulations and systems only for domestic companies do not help but hinder corporate growth.”
ECCK also mentioned Korea’s own regulations, which are far from international standards, in this white paper. Regarding the offshore wind turbine certification system, the Korea Energy Corporation’s Korea Standard (KS) certification and the International Electrical Standards Conference (IEC) conflict, putting companies under double certification, and additional unnecessary costs and manpower are needed as global certification is not mutually recognized under cloud security regulations could be an example to point out.
“We had to put a lot of ECCK’s activities online, but I think we were able to exert positive influence in many ways through the efforts of many people. It’s amazing that people adapt to the situation so quickly.” Chairperson Lukat mentioned that as for advocacy, even with the shift of activities the ECCK team did a great job, and that they were able to interact with members and interested groups. For example, the press conference, which was prepared in time for the publication of the White Paper, was held online with only a minimum number of people attending. In another sense, he also expressed that there were some downsides of the current COVID-19 situation where the unexpected pandemic made the ECCK unable to hold normal events done for networking means.
